must have item :: walrus and octopus chairs by Máximo Riera

If you are looking for a statement piece of furniture that combines modernity with nature, then you have Spanish artist Máximo Riera‘s very unique mix of chairs. He has been a practicing artist for over thirty years, predominantly working in photography, painting and sculpture, yet he has also published a collection of poetry. Inspired by his travel and experiences through Europe and the Caribbean Islands, Máximo’s vibrant use of colour and evocative attention to detail have been an inspiration which convey the meaning of his creations.

walrus – back

His work demonstrates influences from the Pop Art movements and abstract expressionism. Born in Asturias, Northern Spain, Máximo has now retired to his studio in Cadiz, where he paints and sculpts each day. His portfolio site states that, “The artist wanted to be faithful to the animal’s physique and the natural majesty of its movements. Maximo therefore attended to each physical detail of the octopus in order to make the animal the unique protagonist of the whole piece.” Just to make the octopus chair took over thirty individuals and four different companies to assemble this specific design by hand. We think these chairs would definitely add an bold element to any home, however we would love to see the octopus in bright colors. How lovely would that be?

diy :: pretty couch cover up

If you are like me and have cats that tend to sharpen their nails on your couch and you don’t know what to do to remedy the damage then look no further. Amy Gross came up with this fabulous idea of covering up couch claw marks with flea market doilies and I have to say this is FABULOUS!!! Even if I didn’t have the scratch marks on my furniture I think this concept is Anthropologie worthy! However, I do think my husband might be shocked when he comes home to find I’ve appliqued doilies to our love seat. Thanks so much Amy for sharing!

custom furniture by wheeler studio
I love these handmade walnut console and tv cabinets by Wheeler Studio. Jason Wheeler creates these wooden works of art that you can hand down from generation to generation. I especially love the treatment and painting technique he used on the yellow drawers. This is possibly one of my favorite pieces of furniture that I’ve seen and the fact that it’s handmade – even better!
