sandstorms and airplanes :: photography by thomas prior

Today one of my best girlfriends left to move across the world to Taipei,Taiwan. YES TAIWAN! I know right! She’s a gypsy soul and I’m so excited for her journey to begin and she’ll probably be living there for a year. As I write this she’s at the airport in Chicago on a layover. Her five flights to get her from North Carolina to Taiwan reminded me of some photographs I saw a while back that New York photographer Thomas Prior took at Maho Beach located on the lovely island of St. Maarten.

If you think the planes in these photos are pretty close to the water, they are. Each day 747 jumbo jets fly less than 50 feet above tourists floating in the Caribbean waters. These people on the beach and water get to experience a 150-mile-per-hour jet blast as the planes take off. Needless to say they have to put signs on the beach to warn people of the arrival times and when these small sandstorms will take place. I think I would prefer the shade and somewhere a little further away from being hit by 150mph grains of sand. With that being said, Thomas you were one brave photographer! PS. Rach I love you and I’m so excited for you and your journey!
