Happy Monday Lovelies! Today we are excited to bring you a very creative painting by artist Hong Yi. She created a portrait of actor Jay Chou (you might have seen him in last year’s Green Hornet movie) well, to say it’s amazing isn’t giving it enough credit…this is just down right mind blowing what she does with coffee. She used pure coffee with little water to end up getting the really dark tones throughout the portrait. We’re also including the full length video to see how she creates this beautiful work simply using a coffee cup, coffee and paper.

As a Graphic Designer you become fast friends with lorem ipsum to assist you with layout design when you don’t have finalized copy to fill the space. Barcelona designer Alex Trochut has taken these words and created awesome poster designs using mustard and ketchup, sharpies, pens, pencils and even toothpaste to get the point across.

We’re also loving his dark type poster design where a skateboard takes on life and imitates the actual movement of what it is to catch air. Trochut studied Graphic design at Elisava, and started working as freelance designer and illustrator in 2007. Alex Trochut’s illustrations, designs and typography take the modern notion of minimalism and flip it on its side.

Trochut’s work philosophy is “More is more.” It is rich with elegant, brilliantly detailed executions that simultaneously convey indulgence and careful, restrained control. Trochut is driven by a desire to constantly evolve which can be seen in his eclectic body of work.

Renowned for his technically exquisite type creations and designs, Trochut attributes his special connection with typography to his grandfather Joan Trochut – a typographer and the creator of a modular typographic and ornament system built in the 40s.

Happy Tuesday Lovelies! Today we are excited to share a little bit of the awesome world of Philadelphia designer Jaime Diehl! She is one of our Lovely Sponsors and creates gorgeous handbags for everyday use as well as those that you would just love to have as a special part of your wedding day! Here is a little peek into how she got started and what inspires her chic sassy fun line of accessories.

How did you get started making these fabulous bags? I have a 10-year background in Children’s Social Work and Family Therapy. About 6 years ago I started daydreaming about handbag design. I developed quite an addiction to textiles and design. Seriously, sometimes I see a fabric and think, “Oh my, I would totally eat that if it provided any nutritional value whatsoever!”

I became a Stay-at-Home Mom 4 years ago and during that time taught myself to sew, design, and source materials. I started out small with clutch purses and totally fell in love. I love that purses are the easiest way to embrace the current fashion trends without investing too much money and effort.

The shop quickly evolved into orders for multiples after my friend Jill asked me to design bridal and bridesmaid clutches for her wedding. I quickly discovered how fun it is to work with brides! My shop combines my loves (fashion, fabrics, weddings, design) and my strengths (communication, people skills, customer service) all while being home with my two toddlers.

What inspires you? Most specifically I am inspired by current trends in fashion. I read my style/fashion magazines and home decorating magazines 3 or 4 times over before filing them away. I love that fashion and home decor follow the same trends! These two types of mags keep my inspiration boards packed and my sketch book full!

My fabric stash includes soft feminine prints to preppy patterns, bohemian to chic, tribal prints to animal prints. I can’t wait to create lots of color-blocked bags with an array of gorgeous suede I just purchased.

Overall, my late Grandfather’s spirit is always a guiding source. He passed away in 2010 but will never be forgotten- I talk to him often. VincentVdesigns is named for him.

I am self-taught at my craft. I learn as I go how to build a business so I draw on Granddad’s spirit and energy to guide me in the right direction. It’s so amazing to sit in my yard, deep in thought, and ask him, “Am I moving in the right direction? Should I be doing x, y, or z?” There will be a slight shift in the breeze or a butterfly will flutter past and I’ll think “O.K. Granddad, thanks for letting me know.”

If you could peek into any designer’s (living or dead) studio who would it be and why? This question is so hard for me, the shortest answer I can give is this: in my book, Michael Kors can do no wrong. To me, he is the quintessential American designer. I will flip through a fashion magazine and an add makes my heart skip a beat. In an instant I’m in love with the outfit, the accessories, the model, the scene, and sure enough- it’s Michael Kors every time!

Tory Burch also has an amazing mind for design. I would love to watch her process of designing a shoe or bag from the point of inception to the store shelf. Her stores are also gorgeous! When there becomes a VincentV boutique I will totally embrace her philosophy to design the store as if it were a room in my house! Sorry, but there’s no way NOT to mention Jenna Lyons (Creative Director at JCrew). Her mix-and-match wits are super fabulous!

What is your favorite bag in your collection and why? As my fashion tastes evolve I’ve fallen in love with the color orange. My favorite clutch in the VincentV collection is the orange floating buds - I used a soft cotton print from my favorite fabric designer, Amy Butler. The contrasting turquoise lining is a great color combination that’s popular amongst my customers.

Any advice for anyone looking to start their own handmade business? My advice: jump.right.in. You’ve got to start somewhere so don’t worry about starting small. When my Grandfather passed away a very strange but strong creative energy came over me. I embraced it and opened my shop with only a few items. I took the leap and let it evolve. There’s a TON of room to grow but I’ve accomplished more than I expected to thus far- just by jumping in.
